Installing CUDA on Ubuntu 12.04

  • Installing CUDA toolkit on ubuntu

You might have a problem with gcc version 4.7 and sometimes it is better to install version 4.6 and link to gcc:

sudo apt-get install gcc-4.6
unlink /usr/bin/gcc
ln -s /usr/bin/gcc-4.6 /usr/bin/gcc

Anyway after doing so (or not doing so!!), here is the main steps for installing cuda toolkit in ubuntu.
  1. sudo apt-get update
  2. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (to F6) to switch to a text-based login
  3. chmod +x devdriver*.run
  4. chmod +x cudatoolkit*.run
  5. sudo ./cudatoolkit*.run
  6. add following line to either "~./bashrc" OR "/etc/bash.bashrc" files:

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/cuda/bin
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/cuda-*/lib64:lib
